This thesis discusses the effectiveness of using video to improve students understanding on writing spoof text. The background of the study is the students often face difficulties in understanding the writing of spoof text because the students interest and liveliness in writing class are low because they are not accustomed to write in English, less positive response on writing assignments, they feel burdened to write in English because they confused how to differenciate between the spoof text and recount text, so they are not able to write the spoof text correctly. So, the writer wants to help them to improve their understanding on writing spoof text by using video. The study is aimed at responding the question; How is the effectiveness of using video to improve students understanding on writing spoof text at the eleventh grade students of MAN I Kebumen in the academic year of 2011/2012?. The objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of using video to improve students understanding on writing spoof text at the eleventh grade students of MAN I Kebumen.The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of MAN I Kebumen. It is an experimental research, which the sample conducted in two classes; Class XI Social 4 as experiment class who are taught writing spoof text using video and class Social 3 as control class who are taught without using video. The data is gathered through documentation and writing test. There are two test; pre test and post test. All data then are analyzed using t-test formula. It was used to determine whether there is significant difference between the average scores of the experiment class and the control class. After the data had been collected by using t-test, it was found that the pre-test average of the experimental group was 63.13 and control group was 65.16. While, the post-test average of the experimental group was 76.79 and control group was 70.68. The obtained t-test was 3.864, whereas the t-table was 1.67 for α = 5%. The t-test score was higher than the t-table (3.864 > 1.67). It meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected, so video is the effective media to improve students understanding on writing spoof text. Based on the result of this research, the writer suggest that video may be used as alternative media in teaching writing especially in the teaching writing spoof text in order that the students more understand the material, then they can write well and more interested in writing activity.
